TOWN OF FALMOUTH

The key phrase when it comes to Falmouth is variety. Falmouth means so many things to so many different people. To some it is the world-famous scientific research institutions of the Falmouth village of Woods Hole, the Marine Biological Laboratory and the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, inventor of underwater remote control exploratory vehicles. To others Falmouth means fabulous beaches, and they will tell you about the white sand of Old Silver Beach. Others will mention summer theater; the Highfield Playhouse features some of the best summer college theater anywhere. Others will say Falmouth is the heart of Cape Cod's recreational running community, site of the Falmouth Road Race in August, the Cape Cod Marathon in October, and other running events year-round.
Falmouth is located at the southwestern tip of Cape Cod, with substantial coastline on both Buzzards Bay to the west and Vineyard Sound to the south. Like other Cape towns, Falmouth boasts a rich diversity of harbors and inlets for fishing, swimming, sailboating, motor boating, and kayaking. These include Falmouth Inner Harbor, Quissett Harbor, West Falmouth Harbor, and several others. There are several first-class golf courses, a 5 mile bicycle path running from downtown Falmouth to Woods Hole, and several nature preserves including Beebe Woods, Long Pond, and others. In addition to antique shops and a vibrant Main Street featuring great restaurants and a wide variety of retail businesses, parts of Falmouth are still very rural, with traditional farming and cranberry operations still thriving. But there is also a flourishing technology park where high tech industries provide employment to residents as well.
Falmouth is the home of the Falmouth Commodores of the Cape Cod Baseball League, often called the #1 college league in the country, whose motto is "where the stars of tomorrow shine tonight." Access to the island of Martha's Vineyard is just a short ferry ride away from Woods Hole or Falmouth Inner Harbor. The famed Nobska Light is in the town of Falmouth, considered one of the most photographed lighthouses anywhere.
On Cape Cod Falmouth is second only to Barnstable in population, and in popularity with summer visitors. Falmouth is bordered on the north by Bourne and Sandwich, and on the east by Mashpee.
